personal Training

I generally like to work with the owner/s and the dog and give them the skills they need. It is far more rewarding for the owner/s to learn how to control their dog and learn the techniques that they can use for any future more advanced training.

I will sometimes work with the dog on a one-to-one basis to assess him/her. It is often the case that dogs behave differently with someone else.

If a dog does display behaviour with the owners that he/she does not display with me then training sessions can be adapted and more help given to the owner/s to help them.

Rehab Session, Dog

In my initial consultation I will normally insist on meeting with all members of the family involved with the dog. It is hugely important that your dog gets a consistent message from all members of its family (pack).

Once we have everyone’s input, we can decide on a plan moving forward and set training/behaviour goals that all family members can agree on.

Rehab Session, Owner

A lot of my work is in training owners. Owners sometimes do not recognise that their behaviour impacts their dog’s behaviour. Nervous/anxious owners are much more likely to have nervous/anxious dogs.

Working with owners can often result in better behaved dogs without ever working directly with the dog!

Why Choose Me?

Years of expertise

I have over 30 years’ experience in dealing with ‘special needs’ dogs. From the anxious to the aggressive, to the food or toy possessive etc. etc. I can help you understand your dog better which will empower you to help yourself.

For over 20 years I was a foster for a leading animal charity of the types of dogs that were deemed unfit for rehoming.

Every dog and owner are different. Techniques that work for some may not work for others. It is important to adapt and customize training/rehab sessions that work for both owner and dog.

Better Relationships Between People and Dogs

All dogs have personality traits just like us and it is important we recognize these and that we do not turn our dogs into robots!

I personally love a dog with a bit of ‘character’ and would never train this out of a dog.

However, just like us, some personality traits are unwanted and can make life with one of these dogs very difficult.

If you have one of these ‘special needs’ dogs, then I can help.

I will teach you how to understand your dog behaviour, why he/she is displaying this behaviour and how to overcome it.

No behaviour issue is unresolvable. I have fostered or worked with many dogs over the last 30 years plus from various leading charities and rescue groups. All these dogs came to me with behavioural issues that had led their previous owners to give them up for adoption and yet 90% of these dogs were a simple fix once we understood why they are doing what they were doing!

‘Don’t rehome, rehab!’

There are, of course, going to be issues that are unresolvable given certain circumstances. Owners may simply not have the time or resources to cope. Given these circumstances I will always be honest and if I believe the dog needs a home more able to cope then I will advise accordingly and help you through the process.

Fix Your Dogs Behaviour Issues

I can help with all types of unwanted or worrying behaviour. I have tried to list as many as possible below…

Aggression

There are many types of aggression.

  • 1. Predatory Aggression. Aggression towards small dogs, cats, squirrels etc.
  • 2. Frustrated Aggression. Some dogs will be aggressive whilst restricted by a leash or small space and can show signs of aggression when they are approached under these circumstances.
  • 3. Dominant Aggression. If you are not the ‘pack leader’ your dog will try and become the leader. This can result in aggression towards you and family members.
  • 4. Fear/Anxious Aggression. Fearful or anxious dogs are most likely to show aggression as part of their self-preservation instinct. ‘I’m gonna get you before you get me!’
  • 5. Possessive Aggression. This will normally manifest itself in a fierce defence of toys and guarding food etc.
  • 6. Territorial/Protective Aggression. Some breeds are naturally more protective and territorial.
  • 7. Pain Aggression. We must never rule out that your dog’s aggression may be medical. If a dog is in pain he/she may well ‘ask’ you not too touch them.

Separation Anxiety

This has become one of the most common issues with people returning to work after lockdown and can manifest itself in many ways…

  • 1. Urinating and Defecating.
  • 2. Barking and whining when left.
  • 3. Destroying the house.
  • 4. Wanting to escape.

Other Issues

Other smaller issues can also include…

  • 1. Constant barking at the door and at passers-by.
  • 2. Mouthing. (Adult dogs should not be displaying this behaviour)
  • 3. Attention Seeking.

Providing All Types of training for your dog

It has been much harder to socialise puppies during the pandemic and this is where most puppies learn the basics.

However, it is never too late to learn and I can help with…

  • 1. Lead walking.
  • 2. Recall.
  • 3. Basic Commands.
  • 4. Socialisation etc.

Help you to choose the right dog for you

Owning a dog has boomed during the pandemic with many people becoming dog owners for the first time.

So, what is the best dog for you and what breed will fit best into your family or circumstances?

Of course, I am a massive fan of rescue dogs and that these dogs can end up being the best dog you will ever have. But I can help with giving you an insight on all breeds.

Some of the questions I can help with….

  • 1. What breed is best?
  • 2. What size dog should I go for?
  • 3. What personality traits should I look for in a dog?
  • 4. What age dog would be best?
  • 5. Puppy or Adult dog?

I can also accompany you to rescue centres and help you to choose the right dog.
